When Things Get Dark

Do you like reading short stories? I have ever since high school when I first read “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. I remember doing my homework reading it and thinking “this story is so boring” and then BAM! The ending totally throws you for a loop and you realize that it isn’t some boring small-town event, but a horrifying, unthinkable tradition.

Ever since then I’ve been a huge fan of Jackson’s work and have slowly been making my way through her novels and short story collections. When I saw When Things Get Dark: Stories Inspired by Shirley Jackson I knew I had to read it. I was itching to see how other authors would incorporate her unique brand of horror, and friends, it did not disappoint.

The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins

The last few thrillers I’ve read have been 🥱😴 so I’ll admit I was a little hesitant to start The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins. I like my thrillers to be fast, thoughtless page-turners that keep me entertained, but are quick to get through. I don’t want to think about who might have done what, or for the twist to be super obvious; I just want to power read and be satisfied at the end of it. And friends, that’s exactly how I felt with this one 🙌

How a Woman Becomes a Lake

I’ve seen How a Woman Becomes a Lake by Marjorie Celona listed as a thriller in a few different places, and went into this book expecting a wild ride. However, what I read wasn’t what I was prepared for at all. Instead of a story full of twists and turns, I found a beautifully written mystery about how the lives of a handful of characters unfortunately crossed.

Watch Over Me by Nina LaCour

I first heard about Watch Over Me by Nina LaCour during Penguin Teen Canada’s fall preview event this past summer. I’ve heard so many wonderful things about Nina LaCour’s books from friends, but I’ve never actually read one . . . until now. The way this book was described—a beautiful story full of ghosts and grief—piqued my interested a lot, and I knew I needed to read it.
